Tonight the modern apostle, Elder L. Tom Perry, gave a great talk about how our generation needs to rise up and be the greatest generation. I love talk of WWII and he of course brought of how it is his generation that is labeled "the greatest generation" and his service in Japan after the atomic bomb as a marine. I'm amazed that men like him really stepped up to the plate after such devastation overtook the Japanese people, just amazed. He's so inspirational and it was a great lesson of service and having a personal relationship with God.
The biggest thing that stood out to me though within his message, was when he said that Faith is not a consumer product that you just choose whichever beliefs match yours, but instead there is real truth to be had and sometimes we have to adjust or gain testimony of the principles that are hard, but true, instead of vice versa... eventually you recognize their truth. I hope that I live my life that way, living as if I didn't choose a faith that matches "my lifestyle" but instead chose it because I knew in my heart and mind it was and is true.
If you didn't get to watch it, it's pretty short. Here's the link: http://lds.org/broadcasts/watch/ces-fireside/2011/03?lang=eng&pid=738917358001&pkey=AQ~~,AAAAmBrDwtE~,_58lK-P1xvJ5WTHbRnmdONkYkAiPKoal
I sure am glad I live in a country where I can blog about religious and spiritual experiences. This talk made me think again about the rich heritage that I have of individuals who fought and died for their religions (whichever they were) and that because of that, I live in a nation where free speech and talk of religion is not only allowed, but encouraged, whether "society" is accepting of it or not.
